West Salem, OH
We’re just outside Ashland, Ohio, at the Hickory Lakes
Campground. This will be a delayed post
since there is no internet service at this campground. Today was one of the few days where we only
drove Interstates, from 88 to 81 in New York, then on to 80 in Pennsylvania to
80 in Ohio (which is the Ohio State Turnpike) to 71 down to Ashland. An interesting point on the Ohio State
Turnpike is that their rest areas have
spots for RV’s to hook-up with water and electric for a nominal fee. Haven’t seen that anywhere else we have
traveled over the years. The countryside
didn’t change much from New York and through Pennsylvania – it’s all rolling
hills (they call them mountains, but we all know better 😊). Awesome valleys, rivers, and forests make up
the landscape. Ohio flattens out a bit
as we traversed the Ohio River Valley.
We stayed on the road too long today and didn’t make camp until almost 6:30 p.m. We always say that we are never going to travel for that long, but occasionally time slips by. Hickory Lakes Campground is primarily a seasonal campsite for people to enjoy their summers, but they have overnight sites available.
Really noisy
campground – as I sit here writing this, the noise of the bull frogs croaking
in the lake is just deafening! Monday
will be a shorter travel day – hope to find someplace we can spend some quality
time and maybe play golf. No deadlines
and it’s easy driving, since we’ll soon be on I-70 and won’t have to make any
travel decisions as we head toward to Denver.
Perhaps we can find some US highways to get off the Interstate, but the
general direction will be alongside I-70. Hot and humid weather all day. Air conditioning in the RV, whether on the
road or in the campground, works fine and is a blessing. One drawback is that we have the worst TV
reception here – QVC, HSN, and one or two other local stations – no real news
or programs we might like to watch.
We’re enjoying the countryside and it’s easy
travelling. Vi does wonders with meals
in the RV (still unnamed), whether we’re parked in a rest area or in a
campground. Having fun and enjoying our
audio books – the latest was The Exonerator by John Grisham – took us through
both Saturday and Sunday. He does a
great job, his research is amazing, and he weaves an amazing story line.
